transcendence

To transcend means to "go beyond or above". The issues treated by the branch of philosophy called metaphysics--being, causality, time--transcend the phenomenal reality we perceive with our senses. The philosophical love advocated by Socrates in the Phaedrus is supposed to transcend the pleasures of the body and to take pleasure in the true knowledge of the Forms.
