Hieronymus Bosch

1462 - 1516

Hieronymus Bosch was a Renaissance painter in the Netherlands. His work often depicts moral or religious themes in a phantasmagorical style. Bosch's famous tryptich The Garden of Earthly Delights juxtaposes dreamlike scenes of erotic pleasure with nightmarish visions of souls tortured by demons. For Lacan, Bosch's paintings, in which human figures are distorted, penetrated, and dismembered, dramatize the imaginary image of the fragmented body.
