Anna Freud

1895 - 1982

The daughter of Sigmund Freud, Anna Freud worked as her father's assistant until his death in 1939. Freud trained her as a psychoanalyst, and along with Melanie Klein, Anna Freud founded the field of child psychoanlysis. She served as a child analyst in the Hampstead War Nursery in London during the Second World War and worked as a therapist, theorist, and editor throughout her life. Her research led to important insights into the theory of the ego and the defense. Lacan refers to these contributions in his essay on the mirror stage.
