Devi, Mahasweta

Bengali writer Mahasweta Devi was born in 1926 in Dhaka. She is an activist for the rights of tribal groups of India, and much of her work concerns these people. She writes in Bengali and also translates literature into Bengali. Her own work has been translated by Gayatri Spivak and others. Her work available in English includes Imaginary Maps : Three Stories (1994), Bitter Soil (1998), and Mother of 1084 (1998).
