psychosis
Psychosis is a general category for psychological disorders that involve a "break" with external reality. The psychoses can be contrasted with the neuroses, which usually do not cause the patient to lose touch with the factual conditions of the "real world." One of the most common types of psychosis is schizophrenia. In general, the psychoses are less treatable with psychoanalysis than the neuroses, and often require hospitalization and ongoing medication.
