phobia

A phobia is a neurotic condition that manifests itself as an intense, irrational fear. Phobias can develop in relation to almost anything. Some of the most common phobias are acrophobia (the fear of heights), agoraphobia (the fear of public places), and arachnophobia (the fear of spiders). Psychoanalysis views phobias as reactions to unconscious wishes and desires. The feared object represents in some way a desire that has been vigorously repressed. The emotional energy of the repressed desire returns in the form of anxiety.
