paranoia

Although we all occasionally have the feeling that the world is out to get us, paranoia in its clinical form is a debilitating condition in which patients are convinced that forces beyond their control are watching them, manipulating them, or plotting against them. Paranoia can be one manifestation of schizophrenia. In some cases, paranoia is combined with delusions of grandeur, so that paranoid patients believe that their persecution stems from some special status--some may think, for example, that they have been singled out because they possess a secret or an special ability that is a danger to the oppressor.
