CREATIVE WRITING: MEMOIR AND SHORT STORY

In this course, we
will be looking at the art of storytelling and practice it in two genres:  memoir/autobiographical writing and short
story fiction.  Through our daily
readings of memoir pieces and then short stories, along with an active pattern
of writing exercises, we will develop and build on our knowledge of the
elements and modes of narrative.  We will
spend time talking about what a story is––in both genres––what gives it life,
how it acquires narrative energy or drive, and what helps it feel whole and
complete, to possess its own integrity.

The first half of
the course will be devoted to memoir; the second half to fiction. Besides
frequent writing exercises, each student will complete two finished pieces, one
in each genre. Our learning experience will be a discussion-based process.
