In this course we’ll read a selection of major works of British literature,
chosen for their variety: an epic (Beowulf), a romance (Sir Gawain
and the Green Knight), a collection of short stories (The Canterbury
Tales), a comedy (The Taming of the Shrew), a tragedy (Othello),
a satire (Gulliver’s Travels), and a novel (Pride and Prejudice). Amidst all this diversity of form, however,
we will also find some interesting continuities in subject and theme. There will be a paper on each of the books
that we read, plus a final exam.
