Genre (Science Fiction)

This course will
introduce students to some classics of science fiction. It will emphasize
approaching literary texts from the dual perspectives of their generic
conventions and the socio-historical-cultural contexts that “produce” them.
Students will learn how to analyze and interpret texts by reading them closely
for both their formal elements and their ideological resonances. They will
practice the craft of academic essay by developing arguments about texts
through textual analysis and research, and by following the conventions of
formal writing.

Requirements
include two short essays, one long essay, daily quizzes, and mid-term and final
exams.
