This course will review and (through
critical examination) expand basic concepts of literary criticism through a
detailed analysis of a broad range of 20th-century British literature (novels,
plays, and poetry), with many of the works also adapted for film or television.
In addition to the set texts, the syllabus requires that students watch films
and attend at least one local theatre performance outside class time.
Grades will be based on a midterm
(25%) and final (30%), weekly postings on Laulima (30%), and full class, film,
and theatre (15%) attendance.
Student Learning Outcomes
Students will demonstrate knowledge of 20th–century British
literature and be able to discuss how specific works exemplify or resist many
traditional categories within literary criticism.
