Bio for Karyl Garland

“Being able to work with an amazing number of students through both our University of Hawai‘i English Department and the Shidler College of Business is an honor for me,” states Karyl Garland. She has been teaching for over 28 years, the most recent 9 of which have been at UH. Her commitment is to helping others learn to write with power and precision. The courses Garland consistently teaches are English 100/100A: Composition I, English 200: Composition II, English 408: Professional Editing, and Business 209: Written Communication in Business.

Additionally, she teaches a number of courses through our UH Outreach College including "Effective Business Writing," "Advanced Business Writing," and "Proofreading and Copyediting Fundamentals." Along with her being a UH Lecturer, Garland is a freelance writer and editor having most recently worked with writer and illustrator Shaowei Liu to produce HONU 5690—a children's book and true story about a Hawaiian green sea turtle. Garland also has authored dozens of stories and articles in local publications including three cover stories for HILuxury magazine, the most recent being about island matriarch Indru Watumull for the 2022 holiday addition.

As the writer of the story “Into the Woods” about the pristine calabash collection of oceanic fine art connoisseur and photographer Michael Horikawa in the February/March issue of HILuxury she helped bring Oahu Publications the City & Regional South West Eddie Award for Excellence in Magazine Editorial Content. In late October of 2018, 350 magazine media executives gathered to celebrate the very best in stunning design with the Ozzie Award and uncompromising journalism with the Eddie Award. A panel of industry judges narrowed more than 2,500 entries into a pool of roughly 800 finalists. In total, 263 awards were given out across 33 categories.

In 2019, Garland was the recipient of the Frances Davis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching at the University of Hawai‘i. This award recognizes faculty members who have made significant contributions in teaching and student learning. The award “honors an extraordinary level of subject mastery and scholarship, teaching effectiveness and creativity, and personal character.” During the fall of 2021, Garland was asked to present at the following international workshop—Writing, Researching, and Publishing: Navigating Critical Academic Tools and Developing Scholarly Identities.
