Types of Creative Writing

Writing / Art : Creative Nonfiction and Poetry

Sometimes writing is not just about what we say, but about how we see.

In this introductory course to creative writing we will explore the intersections of writing  and art. How does poetry borrow techniques from art making? How does creative nonfiction not just write about art but with it?  How might writing be like drawing or taking a photograph? How do we treat words as visual art?

Through a critical survey of works that incorporate writing and art, students gain a breadth of creative nonfiction / poetic works that incorporate art. This course then invites students to discover the fundamentals of poetry and creative nonfiction through an interdisciplinary practice that draw from the arts. Through workshops, students will develop a multi-genre vocabulary of craft, and complete a final portfolio of poems, nonfiction, and text+image projects.

Previous experience with art is encouraged, but not required.
