Course description: English 412 (1), Nonfiction Writing; spring ’16, TR 1:30-2:45, Kuy 407, Goldsberry.

How to write nonfiction using conventional narrative strategies.* This course examines the ways professional writers apply stock episodes and established character types to building their stories, the importance of “The Best 25 Rules for Good Writing,” how to design your opening page, the details of following a classic plot outline, the conventions for weaving historical and documented fact into the narratives, and every other trick for keeping your readers enthralled. “Speed in communication” is our motto. Tell your story as fast as you can. No books to buy. Students create short books of their own, which include the handouts, class notes, and original manuscripts. Analysis of professional nonfiction. Much in-class editing work using transparencies. A great process. You will learn to write something that can’t not be read.
*There is also a short narrative songwriting component to Eng. 412. Goldsberry teaches songwriting in all of his CW courses.
