Literature of the Pacific

Contemporary Pacific literature holds some of the most exciting and thought provoking stories of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. For those of us located in the Pacific region, these texts are particularly relevant, powerful, and often poignant. In this class, we will be reading, analyzing, and discussing poetry, theatre, short stories, novels, films, and supplementary texts as they pertain to literature in English in the Pacific.

For this course, students will submit short weekly reading responses to the required texts.

There will be two short essay assignments (3-5 pages):

One will be based on research selected and conducted by the student over the course of the semester.

A second essay will be a literary analysis that compares at least two of the required readings.

There will also be a take home midterm and final exam.
