Introduction to Literature: Literary History (Fiction into Film)

In this class, we will examine the ways that fictional literature, in various genres, have been adapted for film and television. Through this discovery, we will be focusing on myths and legends, popular culture, and comics studies. We will mainly be looking at graphic novels that have been appropriated for a global audience. We will start with The Watchmen, discussing the ant-hero and subverting genre expectations. Next up we will look at Sandman, and the accompanying Netflix series. Following that, Persepolis, and I Kill Giants, focusing on coming of age stories, and bildungsroman. We will end the semester with a current literature and movie unit based on what our class chooses.

This class will be taught in person, and you will not need to purchase any materials. All novels, graphic novels, and videos will be distributed in class. We will write 2 major essays, and there will be weekly shorter readings and viewing responses. I have designated each Wednesday as a writing day, and attendance will be optional. There will also be snacks.
