Introduction to Literature: Literary Journalism
Literary journalism, often referred to as immersion journalism, narrative journalism, and/or new journalism, is a form of composition that combines factual reporting with stylistic strategies associated with fiction writing.
Our class will explore the genre through reading and writing. Texts will include In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson, excerpts of Slouching Towards Bethlehem by Joan Didion, and other longer works, short profiles, online articles, and magazine pieces (texts subject to change).
You will also compose literary journalism of your own, which may result in you interviewing people, examining places on and off campus, and engaging with your communities and interests—this can include anything from video game clubs, athletic environments, cultural centers, music/arts/entertainment outlets, food/drink establishments, and many more.
Regarding the major writing assignments, you will be free to write about things that are of interest to you, whatever that may be. Writing in your own distinct voice and experimenting with your prose is highly encouraged.
This class will meet in-person.
