Intro to Lit: Creative Writing (Session II)

The Art of Creative Nonfiction

In this course we will consider the art of creative nonfiction. We will look at different methods that nonfiction writers use to tell a good story—the term “creative” pushes us to reflect on how writers use different methods in storytelling. As we read and write in this course, we will employ narrative techniques that are often associated with fiction—scene, plot, characterization, dialogue, image, lyric—to analyze and write.

We will practice creative nonfiction writing in many different modes—often pushing the boundaries of the genre. We will have writing prompts that will allow us to utilize the techniques we discuss as a class. By the end of the course students will have a portfolio of their work that demonstrates their understanding of creative nonfiction.
