Internship

DESCRIPTION

ENG 495 is a three-credit elective that counts as a 400-level elective for the English major or minor, and gives students the opportunity to get hands-on experience in a field related to English studies. Instead of meeting in a classroom, you will work with a host organization in the local community for 8-12 hours a week to gain real-world work experience. The internship director matches students with an appropriate host organization, and depending on the host’s needs, the intern spends a semester assisting with writing and editing, research, public relations, organizing, and/or an array of communications-oriented tasks. The host organization plays a direct supervisory role with the intern, assigning work and giving feedback as necessary.

Students will send the internship director short reports on their activities, mainly as a record of the work you have done and the skills you have used or learned so that you can add these skills to your resumé and a cover letter of application for your dream job, graduate program, or scholarship. You can also develop an electronic portfolio of work if appropriate to the tasks assigned to you.

Interested students need to apply through the English Undergraduate Director. Please send a writing sample and a list of your top three organizations to ugradeng@hawaii.edu. You can find a list of the host organizations here.
