Asian American Poetry
“And all times. The pause. Uttering. Hers now. Hers bare. The utter.”
(DICTEE, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha)
In this course, students will be introduced to Asian American Poetry within the larger context of American Poetry. We will consider the historical development of Asian American poetry, works from single author collections by poets such as Theresa Hak Kyung Cha and Myung Mi Kim, as well as critical frameworks mapped by such scholars as Candace Fujikane, Lisa Lowe, and Dorothy Wang. In particular, we will consider experimental elements of contemporary poetic forms to question and engage with conventions and notions of an Asian American community and self.
Attendance is mandatory, and all assignments must be completed to pass this course.
