The Scribner Anthology of Contemporary Short Fiction, 2nd edition
This writing workshop focuses on the craft of fiction and encourages students to build a writing community. We will start the semester by reading and discussing published works and playing around with low-risk writing activities. The readings will also help us identify the elements of fiction and how they work.
After an introduction to the practice of the fiction workshop, the majority of the semester will be spent in workshop reading and discussing peer work. In a writing workshop, respect and thoughtfulness are essential; therefore, the course grade also will reflect attendance and participation.
Assignments include weekly fiction writing, weekly written critiques, at least 2 polished stories (which will be revised). Attendance is mandatory.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Deeper, hands-on understanding of the elements of fiction
- Ability to “read as a writer”
- Understanding of the process and language of critique
- Knowledge of how to negotiate membership in a writing community
