Internship

ENG 495 gives students the opportunity to get hands-on experience in a field related to English studies. The Department of English matches a student intern with an appropriate host organization, and depending on the host’s needs, the intern spends a semester assisting with writing and editing, research, public relations, organizing, and an array of communications-oriented tasks.

Interns commit to working 8-12 hours each week for their host organizations. These are unpaid internships; students in the program earn three academic credits, and the internship experience counts as a 300/400-level elective requirements for the English major or minor. The host organization plays a direct supervisory role with the intern, assigning work and giving feedback as necessary.

Although we will not be meeting regularly as a class, students will meet with the Undergraduate Director once throughout the semester to report on their progress, and address any questions or concerns. Throughout the semester, you will also submit three 2-page reflection papers, which you will then use to draft a resumé and job cover letter, due at the end of the semester. Students will also meet with the career center toward the end of the semester to get more feedback on their job materials and to talk about career options.

For a list of organizations who have confirmed they’ll be accepting internships, please check here. For previous organizations who have hosted an intern, check our website. Students may also propose their own internships hosts if they have a connection to a local organization or publication.
