ENG 412 NONFICTION WRITING

In the spirit of the experimentation at the heart of the word “essai”, which means “to test something out” or “to try”, this nonfiction workshop explores CNF as a genre of invention and innovation, of investigation and play.
To essay forth, then, as a way of bringing genres together: from memoir to reportage, from lyric essay to text+image, approaching form not as a set of rules, but as a way of understanding fact, feeling, and the not-so-subtle art of telling the truth—— in whatever form it must take.
We will approach nonfiction as a genre of transformation and change. Students will read contemporary essayists and write a portfolio of creative nonfiction.
