Introduction to Literature: Rhetoric and Literature

This course explores the Modernist movement as a revolution in language, form, and thought across the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Students will examine how writers, artists, and thinkers used rhetoric to challenge inherited traditions, redefine perception, and negotiate the shock of modernity. Through close analysis of literary texts alongside visual art and critical essays, we will investigate how modernist rhetoric shaped—and was shaped by—cultural crises of technology, war, and identity. Readings may include works by Woolf, Eliot, Joyce, and selected modernist theorists. Emphasis is placed on rhetorical analysis, interpretation, and argumentation within modernist contexts.
