This class focuses on revisions to classical dramatic texts. For example, the class will begin with Euripides’ The Bacchae and then move to the Nigerian playwrights Wole Soyinka’s The Bacchae of Euripides to showcase how he repurposed a classic play from ancient Greece. William Shakespeare’s Hamlet will be placed next to August Wilson’s King Headley II. During this section we will also pair and analyze excerpts from Shakespeare’s King Lear and August Wilson’s Fences. From there we will move to a discussion of modernism. To accomplish this task Henrik Isben’s A Doll’s House (or perhaps some other drama of his TBD) will be studied next to Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun. The course will close by studying Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot side-by-side a play by Suzan-Lori Parks yet to be determined. This class fulfills the “O” focus designation so students will be required to give presentations throughout the course of the semester. Student can also expect to read fair amount theory and study terms central to the study of drama.
