English
100 is an introduction to writing in the university, and we will be studying
different modes of writing through the lens of community and place.
REQUIREMENTS
- Be prepared for each class discussion by doing
assigned reading/writing in advance. - Submit all assignments on time.
- Contribute to class and group discussions, both
in class and online. - Check the course website regularly to receive
class announcements and updates. - Think critically. Be curious.
READINGS
There is
no required textbook for this class. Readings will be provided digitally, and
it will be your responsibility to either print these or have a method of
annotating them digitally. All readings must be brought to class on the day
they will be discussed.
PAPERS
There
will be four major papers, each between 3-6 pages long. All papers will be
accompanied by a short meta-commentary reflection. Throughout the semester,
each student will develop a portfolio, which will be submitted as a final
project.
GRADING
POLICY
Final
grades will be 55% from major papers (including drafts, meta-commentary, and
peer reviews). An additional 15% will be from the portfolio process. The
remainder of the grade (30%) will be from attendance and short writing responses.
This class adheres to UH Manoa’s policies on
plagiarism, and deliberate cheating could result in failing the course along
with being subject to further university disciplinary action.
