Indigenous Fiction

In this course, we will be reading indigenous novels and short stories
from the U.S.A., Canada, Aotearoa, and Australia written in English. The class
will begin with N. Scott Momaday’s seminal text, House Made of Dawn, progressing onto more modern examples of
indigenous literature in the four aforementioned regions. While working with
these texts, we will be considering issues of colonialism, indigenous identity,
racism, gender, sexuality, and a host of other cultural and political issues.
If you have a passion for Indigenous issues or just want to explore them in the
form of beautiful literature, this is the course for you!
