Writing
centered on the student-writer’s self and community will be the focus of this
course. The course will involve critical
engagement with a number of exemplary readings, writing exercises, and
workshopping of student work. In
addition to the in-class writing exercises, students are required to keep a
weekly journal and produce at least 20 pages of polished writing in the form of
the personal essay.
Required Texts: Phillip Lopate’s The Art of the Personal Essay(can be
purchased at Revolution Books); a collection of essays that will available for
download on Laulima.
Assignments: Weekly entries in a journal (each, a minimum of 200
words); five personal essays (each, a minimum length of 1,000 words); good
attendance and class participation.
