This course will teach you
how to write critical essays about literature, and to produce creative
literature on your own: in poetry, song, and short stories. You will read
and evaluate two poems, songs, stories, and novels. All texts will be provided
to you, except for one book you have to buy: RAGTIME, by E. L. Doctorow, which
is The Great American Novel. The second novel is your choice. Your
grade will be based on the portfolio you create, which includes handouts, your
notes, and original manuscripts. Much in-class editing work using
transparencies.
