AMERICAN LITERATURE MID-19TH TO MID-20TH CENTURY

This survey will
cover the busiest and most important century in the history of American
culture: the period when the United States changed from a provincial cousin to
the most influential member of the family of English-speaking peoples. The
national culture that gave the world Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson, Henry
Adams and W. E. B. DuBois, Henry James and William Faulkner will reward study,
and we’ll study for the rewards.
