Our focus will be writing the short
story. There are several activities
required for this course, which includes reading and analyzing (as a writer
would) a selection of published short fiction; doing fiction exercises; writing
rough drafts of at least five short stories, each to be submitted to a
workshop; and polishing a short story of a student’s choosing (minimum length
of 3,000 words or approximately 12-15 manuscript pages).
There will be at least two course texts,
which may include Tobias Wolff’s The
Vintage Book of Contemporary American Short Stories and James Daley’s The World’s Greatest Short Stories(Dover Thrift Editions). Texts will be available for purchase at
Revolution Books. Other materials will
be distributed as .pdf files on Laulima.
