This class will
be very useful to anyone interested in exploring teaching as a profession
because it links practical hands-on tutoring experience with readings and class
discussions on the theories and practices of teaching writing. Students will be
exposed to a variety of theoretical approaches to teaching writing, and
readings will deal with such questions as how to address grammar, organization,
style, tone, and creativity, how to teach in small groups, and how to teach
one-on-one. In addition, course readings will address the politics of teaching
writing in Hawaii as a way of acknowledging our unique educational context.
Students will have the opportunity to implement and critique theoretical
approaches by observing a writing classroom and by trying suggested methods in
their own tutoring sessions. Required
readings to be made available to students via Laulima.
