COURSE DESCRIPTION

All writers are welcome to join this in-person poetry workshop that aims to decolonize who “counts” as a poet, what “counts” as worthy literature, and how we share feedback in creative community. If you’re a poet, this course offers the time and tools to help you meet other poets, refine your craft, and write your heart out. If you’re new to poetry, this course offers you opportunities to be part of a supportive writing community that can help you build a more creative life.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • To develop your writing on your own terms
  • To diversify your creative portfolio with projects that take meaningful risks
  • To contribute to a safe and brave writing community through regular acts of deep listening, consent, and creative attention
  • To craft a statement of poetics that reflects your values and desires as a writer in Hawaiʻi in the 21st century
  • To study a decolonial canon of workshop practices and build an informed and confident workshop philosophy of your own
