Fiction

The class concerns itself with American literature and genre. Throughout the course of the semester, we will cover an array of literary genres, ranging from science fiction, postmodern literature, the comic novel in addition to tracking American literature across different cultures. The class will begin with Everett’s comedic post-modern novel Erasure. From there, the course will shift gears to speculative fiction by looking at Octavia Butler’s Kindred before moving to Ana Castillo’s magical realist novel So far from God. The class will end with an examination of Tommy Orange’s There There. In addition to the four novels mentioned above, we will read short stories covering a range of genres and cultures.
