Literature and Economics

How did the “hero” Odysseus get his goods? Are writers better off courting a patron or the market? Did writers exposing injustices ever make a difference? We’ll read works from Homer’s ODYSSEY to Lucy Prebble’s play ENRON.

Our syllabus will include:

  • Brecht’s play MOTHER COURAGE
  • Fisher’s coal-mining poems KETTLE BOTTOM
  • a Filipino fable
  • local poems and stories
  • and Aravind Adiga’s recent novel THE WHITE TIGER about the Indian “economic miracle”

(Books will be available through Revolution Books)

Students write:

  • four 3-5-page papers
  • several 2-page papers
  • a midterm
  • and a final

Students also participate in discussion and panels.
