How did the “hero” Odysseus get his goods? Are writers better off courting a patron or the market? Did writers exposing injustices ever make a difference? We’ll read works from Homer’s ODYSSEY to Lucy Prebble’s play ENRON.
Our syllabus will include:
- Brecht’s play MOTHER COURAGE
- Fisher’s coal-mining poems KETTLE BOTTOM
- a Filipino fable
- local poems and stories
- and Aravind Adiga’s recent novel THE WHITE TIGER about the Indian “economic miracle”
(Books will be available through Revolution Books)
Students write:
- four 3-5-page papers
- several 2-page papers
- a midterm
- and a final
Students also participate in discussion and panels.
