Composition II (Session I)

Exploring Writing and Research from Twitter to Instagram

This course is intended as a continuation of the Composition I course and it will help you further the study of rhetorical, conceptual, and stylistic demands of writing. It will also help you improve your writing and research skills and enhance your ability to produce university-level writing that is appropriate to a particular context and readership.

In addition, this course will familiarize you with digital literacy practices— how to find, evaluate, create, and share content using information technology and the Internet—and what this means for students writing academic papers. For example, assigned readings and discussions will focus on issues of credibility related to Wikipedia, or on the impact of the digital on the ways we read and write. Moreover, both reading and writing assignments will allow you to explore the notion of digital rhetoric—the art of informing and persuading audiences through different media.

Writing assignments for this course will include a critique of an assigned video; a review of a text of your choice (e.g. a book/film/video game/restaurant menu, etc.) to be posted on an online review site; a short Wikipedia entry of your choice; an argumentative and research-based essay on a topic of your choice that is related to digital literacy and rhetoric.
