ENG 100.5 – In Present Tense and Second Person: Voice and Audience in Composition
“To know what you’ll sound like is worth noting –”
“You said ‘I’ has so much power; it’s insane.”
(Citizen: An American Lyric, Claudia Rankine)
Welcome to English 100!
While ENG 100 serves as an introduction to college composition, this particular section posits curiosity, question, or critical inquiry as a foundation for writing. In addition to practicing, acquiring, and developing skills to communicate effectively in written forms, students will frame and reframe questions to inform their writing processes, and explore interests of their own choosing. As students become comfortable writing for variable audiences and according to different topics, students will acquire an awareness of the development of a writing process, and gain a perspective on what it is to have and use a voice through writing. In essence, students will gain an understanding of what it is to use language as an interface for communication and agent of influence within a discourse community.
