English 100, section 703, CRN 97297
This class is ASYNCHRONOUS. If you’re a self-motivated, focused student with strong computer skills, this class is for you!
There is NO TEXTBOOK–all readings will be provided on Laulima–yay for your budget!
Do you think that race is still a major concern in the US? Do you feel that people with mental health issues are stigmatized in society? Do you feel that media outlets like TV and movies portray people of certain groups in stereotypical ways? Do you feel that women are treated fairly in the workplace? If you feel questions like these should be discussed, you’ve come to the right place!
This course will focus on a theme of SOCIAL JUSTICE. You’ll hone the basic composition skills needed to write across the curriculum by focusing on the real-life issues concerning marginalized communities. You’ll have opportunities to explore how discrimination affects BIPOC, LGBTQ+ people, neurodivergent individuals, the disabled community, and more. You might even explore the systemic inequalities that exist within Hawai’i, that are enforced by outside forces. We won’t ever talk about how you vote or identify politically—that’s a choice you must make on your own—but we’ll explore the factual ways in which different groups have been and continue to be disenfranchised in the US.
You’ll write 4 essays that start from very short and gradually work to a full-length paper typical of most college courses that involve lots of writing (5,000 words total). There will be smaller assignments that practice the individual skills that lead up to writing a whole college-level essay.
