Expanded Course Description

In this class, we will be exploring the different modes of writing (both the critical and the creative) and learn to produce a research-based academic article at the university level. We will end the semester with a more creative project, constructing a short piece of life writing, which allows us to think about the impact different modes and forms of writing have on both the audience as well as the writer. Because this is an FW course, you will be producing a significant amount of writing over the summer session, totaling 5000 words.

Our first assignment will be a blog/social media post about a specific issue you feel passionately about. What type of language captures a larger audience’s attention? What about pictures? How do they work with words to tell the story? You will then create an annotated bibliography, collecting credible sources based on your passion topic and write a research proposal. Based on the annotated bibliographies, you will compose a research-based argumentative essay. We often forget that it isn’t just the textbooks that tell us about history. We are both created by and the creators of history. For your final project, you will be writing a short memoir and reflection that situates you in a community or historical moment that you find is most important to you. I’ll guide you through the genre of memoir-writing.

Writing is a process. In other words, the real writing happens not in the first draft, but in the revision. That in mind, we will be engaging in peer reviews and workshops which enable us to work together to further develop our ideas. There is, no matter what stage of writing you are in, always room for growth. As Carol Dweck states, “once we know that our abilities are capable of growth, it becomes a basic human right to live in places that create that growth, to live in places filled with ‘yet’.”

**NOTE: This course is a hybrid sync-async course. In other words, we will be meeting every Monday and Wednesday and have asynchronous work to complete every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

***This is a no-cost textbook course. I will provide for you the supplementary materials/readings as PDF in Laulima.
