Composition I

Aloha kakou, welcome to English 100! Together we will build on your academic skills and practices to better prepare you for college reading, writing, and conversation (and all these skills outside of the classroom too).

If you learn one thing in this class, it should be that writing is a process, and as such, it can be a skill you learn to master with practice. In the course of this class, you will learn how to generate writing ideas, produce working drafts, and revise and edit your writing for submission. Because part of the work of becoming a strong writer requires strong reading and analysis skills, we will practice close reading and analysis of multiple texts, including creative and scholarly texts, film, and still images. To inform and inspire us, we will read, discuss, and respond to arguments about inequities in education, the criminal justice system, and the military.

My goal for this class is an environment for lively, respectful discussion amongst us, and your exploration of writing as a medium for engagement in our communities. Together, we can face our fears about writing and find the joys and rewards in it.
