American Lit Since Mid-20th C

ENGLISH 338 (01) (DL): AMERICAN LITERATURE SINCE MID-20TH CENTURY (03) (TR 9-10:15 AM) KUY 304

This course will showcase the best American writing in the Post-WWII period, writing that was so influenced by the social, political, cultural and economic upheavals and depressions that capitalist America underwent—first as the top imperialist power after WWII, and later a challenged one by vying forces of international capital and progressive social movements both on the national front and on the international stage.

We will read generous selections from The Heath Anthology of American Literature (Volume E, 7th ed.) as well as from other works, including Ralph Ellison’s novel, Invisible Man, August Wilson’s play, Fences, and selections from the anthology of Local Hawaiian writing, Growing Up Local. Texts can be purchased at the UH Bookstore.
