Melinda (Mel) Smith is a PhD candidate studying indigenous literatures written in English. She hails from Tasmania, Australia, and lived there until she was 15 years old. She subsequently migrated to the United States and completed her B.A. at the University of Oregon (2010), double majoring in English and Anthropology. She earned her Masters of Arts from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa (2012), writing her M.A. project on Patricia Grace's novel Cousins. In addition to her academic pursuits, Mel enjoys writing short fiction and poetry, oil painting, baking, hiking, and spending time with her loved ones, including two cats (Alexander and Natasha) and two dogs (Kunik and Maya).
