ENGLISH 414 (01) (DA): FICTION WORKSHOP (03) (TR 12-1:15 pm) Sak C203

Students in this course must have successfully taken Eng 413: Form and Theory of Fiction.

This course is the continuation of Eng 413, though there will be more emphasis on evaluating student fiction in a workshop setting. Students will be encouraged to engage in the short story form but may be allowed to write the novel or novella upon consultation with the instructor.

Written coursework includes several writing exercises (various lengths); two critiques of peer writing (approx. 200-300 words each); drafts of four short stories (minimum length of 500 words each); two revisions of one story (minimum length of 1,000 words each); a final draft of one short story (minimum length of 2,000 words).

There will be two required course texts: James Woods, How Fiction Works; and James Daley, ed., World’s Greatest Short Stories.  These texts may be purchased at the UH Bookstore.
