Professional Editing

In this course, students will learn standard editing marks, principles, and practices. Our textbook will be THE COPYEDITOR’S HANDBOOK (University of California Press, 2005), which covers such editorial considerations as grammar, punctuation, and the treatment of quotations. In addition to preparing for class and taking quizzes, students will be expected to post weekly comments and questions at the class blog (http://edithawaii.blogspot.com/). There will also be a team presentation on the editing profession: each student will be paired with a classmate and expected to work 4 to 6 hours on this project. Those students wishing to read further and learn on their own will be given a short list of optional reading material and additional exercises. Grades will be based on class participation, quiz scores, blog participation, and the team project.
