Course Description

This course is designed to offer training and experience in business communication forms, including resumes, letters, emails, presentations, and reports. 

By the end of this course, you will have experience in creating and analyzing resumes and cover letters; email, letters, and memos; and presentations such as meeting reports, web conference, and appropriate client interaction. You will also work on evaluating job offerings and job boards from the positions of both a job-seeker and a hiring professional. 

You will have opportunities to tailor the course projects to your own fields of interest within business, including areas such as accounting, finance, entrepreneurship, human resources, management, international business, and marketing. 

Course Goals and Expectations

This course will provide opportunities to examine and experiment with a variety of business writing and communication genres, and to workshop writing in formats including group workshop, peer workshop, and discussion board workshop. We will discuss craft elements of each genre and ways that these elements can be applied across genres. We will also explore business writing strategies, and you will have a chance to discuss your business goals and areas of interest, and to develop strategies for effective communication.

Major Assignments will include 4000 words of polished prose, broken up into weekly blog posts, writing workshops, three short papers, and a final exam.

  • Blog Posts – 15 points – Based on Prompts for Critical Business Writing – 300 words each
  • Paper 1 – 20 points – Resume and Cover Letter – 750 words
  • Paper 2 – 20 points – Presentation and Report – 1000 words
  • Paper 3 – 20 points – Email, Letters, and Memos – 750 words
  • Writing Portfolio and Process Paper – 10 points – 1000 words
  • Final Exam – 5 points – 500 words
  • Workshop & Participation – 10 points
