American Lit to Mid-19th C

This class investigates the formation of American literature to the mid 19thcentury. We will be primarily concerned with narratives of slavery, sentimentalism, romantic literature and the transcendentalist movement, and gothic literature.  The goal of this course is to increase close reading skills, critical thinking and writing, and to understand literary movements and the historical conditions that produced them. Some authors will include, but are not limited to James Cooper, Harriet Jacobs, Frederick Douglass, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Thoreau, and Margeret Fuller.
