This class will explore nineteenth-century representations of bodies, of the relations between people, and of the relations between people and the world in the context of the period’s many social and political upheavals, such as the legal abolition of the British slave trade, the expansion of empire, the rise of industrial capitalism, and the introduction of new forms of science and technology. Some particular focuses of the class’s readings and discussions will include travel narratives, the gothic, and representations of normative and non-normative sexualities. Readings will include The Woman of Colour, The Island of Dr. Moreau, and Wuthering Heights.
